Kukeri Masks - Old Bulgarian Tradition

Kukeri – this is an old Bulgarian tradition. In the beginning of the year men dress in scary Kukeri costumes and masks. The dance on the streets in order to scare the evil forces. The mass are made with different colors of treads, pieces of cloth, mirrors, shiny sequins and other elements. The must be very scary to scare the evil and make it leave the people’s homes.

These are the masks made by the kids from Young Bulgarian Voices NY and their teacher Meglena Zapreva.

For the base of the masks the kids used ordinary paper files, tied at the back. For the eyes they have made two holes.
