Years ago someone gave to me a little sugar bowl made in the same manner 🙂 I’m still using it, although its lid is broken and glued back. 🙂 

You can make the bowl from clay, salt dough or plasticine. You can paint it when it’s dry and hard. Ours turned out very pretty after we painted it with metallic tempera paints (our latest discovery). 🙂

Make the bowl base. Take small pieces of clay and roll them between your palms to make shapes like the ones on the picture above. Start building a wall on the round base, layering the clay rolls and making sure they overlap well. When your bowl is ready, make sure all the parts are well pressed against each other (press them with your fingers) so your bowl will not fall apart when it’s dry.
